On the east side of the valley are the Chiricahua Mountains. "Wonderland of Rocks" a National Monument is located here and so is some of the best birding in the U.S.  Tall pines, whispering streams and the chattering of squirrels and blue jays overlay the whispers of the past, the quite steps of the Chiricahua Apache as they pass through time. This valley is steeped in the past, with ghost towns such as Courtland, Gleeson and Fort Bowie and almost ghost towns such as Pearce, a small but growing arts community. Full of history you can go to any town in the area and go through museums, antique shops and see wonderful old restored buildings. The Willcox Playa which is an ancient seabed provides a winter home to the Sandhill Crane and other wetland birds.
